Our mission is to preserve the character of historic buildings and homes in Champaign–Urbana, restoring function where needed through careful repair and respect for original materials.
A window should move. A door should fit. Hardware should serve its purpose. We consider how a feature works as well as how it looks, assess what can be saved, and develop a practical plan for the repairs it needs.
A FOCUSED CRAFT
Windows first. Character throughout.
01 / THE SPECIALTY
Historic window restoration
Reglazing, sash and wood repair, and assessment of sticking windows, failed sash cords, fit, and hardware. The goal is to retain original character and help windows open, close, and secure properly.
Repair and refinishing for wood doors, sills, and trim, with attention to fit, operation, and hardware. Keep the details that connect a home’s rooms and elevations.
03 / THE FINISHING TOUCH
Preservation-minded painting
Interior and exterior painting with thoughtful preparation and attention to existing materials. A considered finish brings the repaired details together.
Repair options and pricing depend on condition. Your written estimate sets out the agreed scope.
THE PERSON BEHIND THE WORK
Careful work. A direct conversation.
Work directly with David Richardson.

Based in Champaign–Urbana. Inquiries from surrounding communities are welcome; project fit and travel are discussed individually.
Share what you have.
Tell us where the project is, what needs attention, and what you hope to preserve. You don’t need to diagnose the problem first.
Assess the possibilities.
Discuss project fit and arrange an assessment when appropriate. Condition guides the repair options and priorities.
Agree on scope and timing.
Review a written estimate before committing. Full-time work begins in late May 2027; dates are confirmed for each project.
LATE MAY 2027 & BEYOND
Discuss your 2027 project.
Have a window that sticks, tired woodwork, or a restoration you’ve been meaning to begin? Tell us a little about your home.
A thoughtful starting point.
A single window or a phased project is welcome. We’ll discuss what makes sense for the building and your goals before agreeing on the work.
A FEW PRACTICAL QUESTIONS
Before we begin.
Do old windows always need replacement?
No. A hands-on assessment helps determine whether repair, reglazing, or more extensive work makes sense. The right approach depends on the condition of the sash, frame, glass, and hardware.
Does restoration include making things work?
Yes, when needed and included in the agreed scope. We assess window movement, cords, fit, and hardware, or how a door opens, closes, and latches. Appearance and operation are considered together.
Can we restore a little at a time?
You can ask about a phased scope. We discuss priorities and practical sequencing, then agree on the work and schedule for each phase.
When can work start?
Full-time work begins in late May 2027. Inquiries are welcome now. Estimates and start dates are confirmed individually; submitting the form does not reserve a place on the schedule.
